We made history together

Dear Kapatid,

Happy Monday!

Today’s newsletter is very important for two main reasons. First, this is a declaration of our collective win after successfully mounting a 14-hour non-stop online celebration of the 122nd Philippine Independence Day centered on young people’s participation and second, a strong affirmation of where we stand as an organization. It’s a statement summed up in our statement of purpose: “that collaboration and dialogue are precursors to securing a better and just future for all.”

Aside from the likes and shares that we together garnered, it is noteworthy to say that the highlight of the event is on how young people’s voices were given primacy. We purposefully created and designed a program with the best interest of both children and youth in mind. Their voices are now part of the bigger picture. Their vision of the new normal becomes our vision too. This is co-creation. If you haven’t watched the event, you can still watch it here.

This new milestone was made possible because of the passion of young people behind the cameras and computers. They are the members of the Ideas Positive Alumni Community and the members and volunteers of the Positive Youth Development Network. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank them for their hard work and sacrifice.

In this time of the pandemic and the new normal, it is a must that shared leadership should shine the brightest. The first step is to communicate your vision and trust young people that they can deliver using their own strengths. At the back room of the #OnePilipinas event is a leadership lesson that I want to share with you. The first step is to communicate your vision, and trust that young people can deliver using their own strengths.

May these lessons of #OnePilipinas event inspire us all to again trust each other especially in these difficult times. Our Philippine history is replete with narratives portraying division and betrayal. However, we should not be prisoners of the past. Our mindsets should shift and adopt changes necessary to co-create a better future for all. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

For the youth,

Alfred O. Dicto
