What we learned from our mentor

Dear Kapatid,

Happy Friday!

We started the week with a reflection about the need for some level of flexibility. We want to close this week by sharing a personal lesson from one of our mentors, Dr. Eddie Dorotan, the Executive Director of Galing Pook Foundation.

When the entire Luzon was placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine two months ago, we immediately took the first flight back to Iloilo from Manila. The only thing that I was able to place inside my bag was the book given by Doc Eddie. The title is Adaptive Leadership. It became my source of inspiration and refuge as we developed the Young House Heroes Initiative.

The book taught me to become adaptive and creative. It reminds leaders, especially the emerging ones, to consider the changes in their environment as a lamppost guiding them to the right strategies. Upon reading the book, I remember the lesson Doc Eddie whispered during an activity we did with the Galing Pook Foundation in Manila last year. He said that leadership is about courage, creativity, and compassion; and above all, it’s about putting your heart in the right place, at the right time.

For this week, we are happy to report that PYDN’s Young House Heroes Initiative was cited by the Council for the Welfare of Children as one of the good practices in engaging adolescents and youth in times of COVID-19 crisis during the House Committee on the Welfare of Children meeting last Wednesday. PYDN was also included in the 31st situation report of the World Health Organization in the Philippines. You can download the report here.

These small steps humble us knowing that these were achieved without the grace of courage, creativity, and compassion. Instead, it inspires us for the fact that this was made possible because of the constant encouragement and support from CWC, UNICEF Philippines, Unilab Foundation, NYC, and all our hard-working partners in the field.

As we approach the weekend, we may find solace in this beautiful leadership lesson. We may find the courage to use our creativity in extending our compassion inside and outside our homes as we navigate the turbulent tides of time.
